The AI Cognitive Mirror: Simulating Consciousness, Ethics & Re-claiming Human Agency

Online via Google Meet 2 Hours September 25, 2026 10:30 AM (CEST)
Lecturer : Katharina Diem
Is AI merely a technological tool, or is it a mirror of human consciousness? Inspired by the ancient theatrical motif of the Deus Ex Machina—the illusion of an abrupt, magical fix from above—this workshop reframes our relationship with technology. AI does not solve our problems for us; it demands a sharpening of our own mind, intention, and critical evaluation. We explore AI as a simulation of human cognitive processes and an interactive resonance space—a tool to declutter our thoughts and map our ideas, while consciously keeping our inner creative authority intact rather than outsourcing it to the machine. Learning Objectives: - Deconstruct the Myth: Shift from expecting technological salvation (Deus Ex Machina) to taking active responsibility for human intent and critical evaluation. - Recognize Cognitive Echoes: Identify how AI mirrors both our conscious insights and our unconscious biases/thought loops, avoiding the trap of treating AI as an uncritical "authority" or absolute truth. - Practice Mindful AI Usage: Develop an ethical, ecologically aware relationship with generative tools, understanding how they reshape our collective thinking, attention spans, and physical environment. - Bridge Art & Synthesis: Apply media arts frameworks to use AI as a sparring partner for creative brainstorming without surrendering human agency. Topics Covered: - Deus Ex Machina vs. The Cognitive Mirror: Moving away from technological illusion toward conscious self-reflection. - The Illusion of the "AI Therapist": Critical thinking on prompt feedback loops, subconscious bias, and why AI often tells us exactly what we want to hear. - Mindful Tech & Environmental Realities: Understanding the ecological footprint of AI ecosystems and its impact on the collective field of human attention. - Human-Centered Synthesis in Media Arts: How artists use generative models to transform mental "thought swirls" into clarity, using AI as a dynamic mind-map while keeping full creative control. Tools & Methodologies: - Conceptual Frameworks: The "Cognitive Mirror" Approach, Critical AI Metaphors (Deus Ex Machina), and Ethical Frameworks for Media Artists. - AI Platforms: Generative text & visual models (ChatGPT / Midjourney / Claude) used as interactive tools for cognitive mirroring, creative brainstorming, and critical prompt refinement.
